He's on a local morning show here in LA on KROQ every-now-and-then, and he usually sticks around and does the show with them for an hour or so (obviously promoting his stand-up, but still). He's not that bad. I don't think I'd pay to see him at a club, but if I came across his stand-up on TV, I'd watch. Once he got over having to be OVERTLY vulgar in the late 90's to shed his "Daddy Tanner" image, he calmed down and started actually being clever. BTW, speaking of comics being surprisingly funny, I caught Bobcat's stand-up bits on Sirius radio the other day, and it was fucking HILARIOUS! That guy's voice drives me bonkers, but his bits on Hollywood Squares and Melissa Ethridge choosing David Crosby to father her child had me laughing so hard, I thought I'd vomit.

As a comedian, he is brilliant. I loved the timing he used with his stand-up. The true brilliance was turning that into piles of money through AFV and the sitcom. I still enjoy watching AFV reruns where he uses some of his old comic timing to throw out a side comment...and then another and the audience is lost.

The great roasters of yore made jokes out of the well known personality traits of the honoree and developed them into a short monologue or essay. That happened because the people roasting the person were good friends of them as well as genuine wits. Take away either one of those things and you don't have a good rost. At the roast of William Shatner all I could think was Lisa Lamponelli, Arte Lang, Jeffery Ross, Jimmy Kimmell and Sara Silverman don't know him so they are stuck with fat and overacting jokes. Takei, Nichols, and White were able to do better because they've actually spent time with the man.

...and, yeah, saget was lamenting his circumstances all the way to the bank for years. what of it? freakin' starring on _full house_ AND _amercia's funniest penile traumas_ would give me tourette's syndrome for nineteen lifetimes. at this point, he doesn't have to be dirty, or presentable, or doing comedy routines, or anything at all -- he just needs to make interest on what he's salted away. sure, he's no comic genius, but his _aristocrats_ segments are absolutely some of the funniest in the film, portions of that _that ain't right_ special are pretty damn hysterical and he seems to have a considerable sense of humor for his farkatke career. yes, herc -- saget IS funny. put me in his corner, though make sure i'm facing him...

If you thought he wasn't doing those 'awful' jokes on purpose (and as someone else said) didn't realize what he was doing, then it went way over your head. I mean the guy was reading the fucking paper at one point in the show!

These Comedy Central roasts are generally weak. How long do the roasters have to prep? I mean, do they find out they're booked when they see the commercial with their name in it? Norm was awesome, Saget's wrap was good, and Leachman was pretty fuckin' funny, but everyone else seemed like they should have just phoned in. Pohsehn should've smoked more. Lovitz should've stayed home. Anyone have a guess as to who wrote Uncle Jesse's material? It wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected, and was itself funnier than Greg Giraldo, Susie Essman, and Jeff Garlin put together.

For all concerned. The Dean Martin Roasts were even phonier, compiled with hundreds of edits to make it look like "stars" like Ray Beluga were really there. In the 21st century, these things are just as lame. What'd ya expect from a Bob Saget Roast?

I used to love Norm McDonald, but that was painful, you just cringe on your couch waiting for it to end. Giraldi is always the best one cause he doesn't mind offending anyone. Ross is OK tonight, but he usually kills. Jim Norton was great, and Cloris Leachman was funny too. Jon Lovitz, Norm McDonald, Sarah Silverman (Notice a trend of ex-SNL'ers?) were JUST NOT FUNNY! Seeing them makes you yearn for the Eddie Murphy or John Belushi days. Seriously, this was a pretty weak roast, as with the exception of the names I mentioned, most of these comedians were painful to watch, and the only saving grace was cursing to get a laugh. Wow how comedy has changed. As for Bob Saget, his HBO special last year was probably the worst set I have ever seen from a comedian. You wonder about Hollywood when you see shit like that, there has to be more funny people out there!

did one of the funniest bits I have ever heard in my life, back in the early '80s. Imagine his voice, then the voices of the actors he impersonated. What if other actors had been in famous TV shows? Like "The Honeymooners"? James Mason as Ralph Kramden (lifts his head as his face goes quiet and regal) - "Alice ... Alice ... I'm going bowling with Norton." Richard Burton as Norton (tucks in the mouth and scowls) - "Oh, Ralphie boy! Friend o' mine, pal o' mine - how are ya?" anybody who let his act get over their heads needed to pull them out of their asses. The absolute cheeze of the jokes was teh whole punchline. "I'm saying you're a dogface". Lovitz was pretty weak. Jodi sweetin looked pretty hot for a former meth addict. overall decent roast. and anytime comedy central ignores adny dick I have to clap. Though based on teh stories lovitz might have finished what he started if dick showed up.

I think it was around '96, which would make her on the cusp of 40, a couple years after East Of Eden (Exit Eden?), so I think a "pretty good there, Bob" is appropriate.

I just think that whole set at the roast utterly bombed. I am not a McDonald basher, as I loved him on Weekend Update, Bob Dole, etc, as his dry humor is perfect for certain situations. But this was just cringeworthy to listen to, as I felt sorry for him, cause I think he knew he was bombing. Jim Norton followed that by saying something like, "I think the people would have rather watched Henry Fonda picking roses then listen to that!" It happens, but many comedians as they get old, get less funny, cause they start buying into themselves and feel that anything they say is funny, and forget about their roots. Norm McDonald sitting there with the newspaper pretending not to listen to the roast was dumb, and if he was an up and coming comic, he never would have done that cause he wasn't Norm McDonald then. But he is now that star comedian from SNL who everybody was mad he got fired, so he was going to do a newspaper schtick during the roast. Sorry Norm, I love ya, but that was Chevy Chase territory.

I just the video of Norm MacDonald's performance, and it was hilarious, subversive and brilliant. It's practically the only clip from the roast that's making the rounds online. And what's the reaction on Ain't It Cool Talkback? Mouthbreathing confusion. Sad. I'm not sure I can trust some of your taste in comedy.

"If you didn't howl at Norm's set you're a fucking troglodyte." For fuck's sake. "Getting it" and "thinking it's funny" are two quite different things. I don't think anyone on this TalkBack honestly didn't get that it was a GAG. Some of us just happen to think that it was very awkwardly and ineffectively executed. I thought the best parts of it were when Norm finally started turning around to Saget and reiterating the punchlines as if even he thought they were strange. It was "amusing" at best. It's a bit much to call it "brilliant" and "genius." Yeah, he took a shot at something a bit risky. Can't fault him for that. I just happen to think it didn't work. My opinion. Doesn't mean it went over my head. Jeff Garlin's bit wasn't that funny either. That doesn't mean I thought he was really an old-school TV producer named Sol Schwartz. Norm's okay. Hardly a comic genius, but he's a funny guy. Sometimes. Comedy, like almost everything else we fight about on these TalkBacks, is after all subjective.

Yeah that was a good comeback by Norm, but come on it wasn't that funny! Geez, you guys are talking about McDonald like he is George Carlin or something! Funny is funny, no matter how you slice, and when something is awkward it is awkward, so please don't tell me I don't 'get' it, as I see what each comic was going for, but only certain ones can pull it off. Certain comics are only good in certain settings, some need a script all the time, some need to be edgy, some need to be dry, as everyone has their style of humor, but in the end, if I don't laugh, I hate to break it to ya, it aint funny to me. If 'getting' someones humor was all it took to be a genius, then Sarah Silverman would be the Queen, but she tries to be edgy, she tries to do something different, but she AINT funny most of the time.
